CMS Explained

A CMS (Content Management System) is used to enable non-technical personnel to update/add to a website via a password protected private back-office area.

Updates and additions, including uploading of new photos and files etc., are actioned using forms similar to those often seen on website enquiry pages ... where one types into a text field and then clicks a submit button.

CMS is the user-friendly (non-technical) way of managing an online database. The database is used to store data which is then dynamically presented on pages within a website.

CMS can be side-wide or implemented just for certain areas of a website (i.e. only those areas that need to be updated regularly)

We will only recommend implementation of CMS if advantageous to the goals of your website!

Benefits of using a Database

CMS - the benefits are explained above.

Seperation of Design and Content - by integrating a database with a website one achieves complete separation between design and content. One can therefore work with either - without disturbing the other.

Time saving and easy to keep up to date - content is delivered using a small number of page layout styles (templates) instead of writing a new static html page for every piece of content. In this way a database-driven website can, for all practical purposes, have unlimited pages, though they are actually only written as needed (dynamically) - on the basis of choices made by the website user. This is particularly useful where a website would otherwise need 100s of static html pages.
